Writers’ Insight: Interview with Caitlin Carpenter, Winner of The Letter Review Prize for Short Fiction

What are the most important steps an amateur writer can take?

Join a group of beta readers. It’s also useful to work with a good developmental editor at the earliest possible time in your process to make sure you’re on the right track.

Which books is it most important for an aspiring writer to read?

It’s a cliche at this point, but Save the Cat is so useful in making sure you’re hitting the key steps in a character’s journey.

What do you believe is the function of your art?

I enjoy looking at how one change in the world – often around AI/technology – would impact people on an individual level. How does that change how we think about ourselves? The nature of being human? Our relationships with each other?

Which successes are you most proud of?

I started writing fiction earlier this year (2024), and I’ve completed a short story collection (around AI and motherhood), a young adult novel, and a thriller novel. I’m happy I was able to finish a few pieces of work and now can work on revising and improving them.

What have been your most meaningful or profound experiences as a writer?

Helping other beta readers improve their work. Often finding the problems in someone else’s work, helps me look at my own in a new light and correct mistakes. It’s also rewarding to see someone else’s work develop and discuss writing with other people who enjoy it.

What do you find most inspiring?

I love seeing debut authors sharing their books on social media. It’s great to hear their stories of how they got published. Their journeys are often non-linear and involve setbacks, but the reward of publishing their novel is worth it.

Would you mind sharing a photograph of a part of your bookshelf (or your library) that is meaningful to you? What makes it meaningful to you?

Here is a pic of a section of my bookshelf. For Christmas one year, a friend went to a bookstore and they interviewed her about what kind of books I liked. Then they sent me several short, lesser known novels they thought I’d enjoy. It was an amazing gift, and I quite enjoyed each of the selections. Also, I love Han Kang, so thrilled she’s getting the recognition she deserves.
