Writing is an important aspect of almost everybody’s life nowadays. We write at school, home, and work, and many people enjoy writing but don’t write many words every day. If you want to know how to write more words per day, keep reading.

1. Write

Believe it or not, simply sitting down and writing is one of the first steps that you can take to write more words per day. You might be tempted to wait until you are inspired to start writing. Or, you may overthink what you are writing and the quality of your writing, but don’t worry about that. Instead, just sit down and write.

Find a writing medium that you enjoy using. You can use a pen or pencil and paper, a laptop, or another writing medium. If you find a writing medium that you enjoy using, you will write more words per day.

2. Revise After Writing for the Day

Revising is necessary if you want other people to enjoy your writing, but if you spend all your time revising instead of writing, you won’t write much. Revising is important when it comes to fine-tuning your writing, not when you are trying to put words on the page.

If you want to write more words per day, don’t worry about revising what you write. Your first draft will be full of mistakes, and if you fix them as you go, you won’t write as many words. That is a problem if you are working on writing more words per day. Instead, revise after you finish writing for the day.

3. Establish a Routine

For some people, there is a certain time of day when they write well and can focus. That time of day varies person by person, but find a time when you can focus on writing without any distractions.

After you find the time of day when you can focus on writing without any distractions, sit and write at that time every day and make it part of your daily routine. Routine writing will help you write more words every day because your brain will think “time to write,” and it will create a habit. Your mind will get used to writing, and you will be able to think of things to write more easily, which will lead to you writing more words.

It is beneficial to write in the same place every day—it can be at a desk, in a comfortable chair, or on the couch. If you write in the same place every day, your brain will focus on writing while you are sitting there. Try to make it a place where you don’t do anything other than write.

4. Keep Paper with You

If you want to write more words per day, keep a piece of paper and a pen or pencil with you at all times. Whenever you think of something to write, even if it is an item to add to your grocery store list, take out the paper and write it down. This will lead to you writing more words per day.

The paper that you keep with you doesn’t need to be a large notebook. It can be scrap paper or a small notepad that you can purchase at the Dollar Store. Just having the paper with you will allow you to write down more words. The paper will also help you with brainstorming.

It is also a good idea to keep paper and a pen on your nightstand—that way, if you wake up in the night with an idea, you can quickly jot it down before falling back asleep.

5. Brainstorm

If you want to write more words per day, take some time to brainstorm or write down your ideas as they pop into your head. Even if you don’t think that your ideas are worth developing, just writing them down will make you think of more ideas, which will lead to you writing more words per day.

Many people do their brainstorming in one sitting and set aside part of their day to brainstorm. If that works for you, that’s great, but you don’t have to. Just make sure you have something to write with around you at all times so you can brainstorm and write down your ideas before you forget them.

6. Set Writing Goals

If you want to write more words per day, set some reasonable writing goals. If you set a goal and reach it every day, increase your writing goal.

Make sure that the writing goals you set are reasonable for you. If you write almost nothing daily, set a goal to write 100 words per day. When you regularly reach that goal, increase it. If you are writing 100 words per day, increase it to 150 or 200 words per day. You can also set time-related goals, such as writing for 10 minutes a day. Once you make that goal consistently, you can increase your time.

7. Work on Typing Speed

Although this is kind of obvious, if you can increase your typing speed, you will write more words per day. Most people nowadays type on their computers and don’t write on paper. So, the faster you can type, the more words you will write every day.

You can practice typing and take typing tests online to improve your typing speed until you arrive at a typing speed you are happy with. Practice makes perfect!

8. Focus

Last but not least, do your best to limit any distractions that will take your attention away from writing. This could include movies, books, people, the need to eat, or anything else you can think of. It is a good idea for you to use the restroom before you sit down to write, and maybe even grab a drink and some food so you don’t have to get up and do that later.

If you focus well while wearing headphones and listening to music, then wear your headphones and listen to music. Turn your phone on Do Not Disturb mode to avoid distractions from apps and notifications.
